As unfortunate and ultimately sad as this case was, its circumstances are so unusual, indeed probably so incapable of duplication, that absolutely no general principle regarding the legalisation of abortion in the Republic of Ireland should be drawn from them.

It wasn't, unfortunately:
Abortion in the Republic of Ireland is illegal unless it occurs as the result of a medical intervention performed to save the life of the mother.
I hope, but don't anticipate, that the consultant in question is suspended from the medical council register, his or her decision was neither medically nor legally the right one. (This is not to say that the statutory (as opposed to constitutional) lack of clarity here was any help at all.)
Your desire to see someone lose their job is unpleasant.
